The basic idea behind the concept was to create a common platform for communication between digital instruments, and so it was - at the outset.
GM - General Midi - was quickly "expanded" with GM2 (Korg), XG (Yamaha) and GS (Roland).
Several use GM2, while the others are only used by Yamaha and Roland.

As if this is not enough, there are several "subformats" of these.

These facts taken into consideration, one can rightly claim that midi is no longer a universal language.

Usually it is not illuminated which format a midifile has.
By testing a midfile in Style Works, I'll hear immediately if it's going to be a good result or not - if this is for Tyros4.
If, on the other hand, I'm going to make something for Pa3X, I can not trust what I hear in Style Works.
This is because communication between Style Works and Pa3X "takes place in the wrong language" - GM.

Pa3X try to change everything to GM2 when you installing a style created in Style Works,
which resulting in a completely different sound - often completely awful.
It is therefore much more difficult to create styles for Pa3X that have a good sound.

If the midifile has GM2 format, the sound can be better than anything else with Pa3X.

Oh wow.  So midi is not a universal language but has it's peculiar quirks.  So when you pick a midi for the first time and run it thru your software, can you tell immediately whether it's going to be a good one or not?  Or do you have to translate/reformat or otherwise goof around with it to know?

Strictly speaking, the only (probable) reason that a midi sounds terrible is that the format is incorrect in relation to the device this is being played on; whether this is a media player or a keyboard.

Formats can be converted, but this rarely goes well because midi is the most complicated language of music - it's almost like converting scripts; Everything must be manually reviewed afterwards.

For example, GM2 (Korg) works poorly for Yamaha, while XG (Yamaha) works extremely poorly for Korg.

Thanks for the insight, that helps a lot.  Regarding Ingrid, I listened to the midi I sent to you and it sounds horrible on it's own. So the voicing plays a huge part.  So if someone has handcrafted a midi for a particular keyboard and it sounds awful when I listen to the midi, is it possible it'll be fine once run through our keyboards?

A lot of software has only 4 channels, which makes all styles made becomes poor if the song uses more than 4 musicians.
BIAB and EMC Style Works 2000 are examples of this.
Just for this reason, styles made with these software is of limited quality - if the midi contains more than 4 channels.

EMC Style Works XT has a basic layout of 4 channels for Main A, and 5 channels for Main B, C and D.
All Intros, Endings and Fills have 7 channels (one channel is unifying for drums / perc, and is converted into a single channel).

It's easy to reverse all sequences to play 7 channels when you know how.

I would strongly assume that most midis is handmade on a keyboard; just like you did with your Ingrid Michaelson song.
This is undoubtedly the best way to do it.

Complex songs with more than 8 channels will require the use of MultiPads or the like in order to reproduce all instruments,
because there is only room for 8 channels on a keyboard.

As far as I can see, this is absolutely necessary.

There are certainly many "secret" ways to do this.
A skilled musician is required to make midis this way.

I'm playing the B/D# as an E with an added D#, easy enough on the fingers and sounds good with this style.

On another note (no pun intended), if I understand it correctly, all midis are made by hand.  Someone's sat at a keyboard or composer software and entered the notes or at least imported the sheet music for starters.  If so, that might explain why so many midis of great songs don't exist, cuz the sheet music is next to non-existent.  I mean unless you're willing to pay the big bucks for a copy from a music publishing site.  And what does exist for many, like Steve Miller's Fly Like An Eagle, is just an abbreviated fakebook version so you'd still be left with a lot of work.  Any feedback?
